After receiving this Mod 70 Featherweight from Midway, I was very happy with the fit and finish of the gun except the way the safety functioned. This is my 1st Winchester. The stock is beautiful. The safety on the other hand had obviously not been checked at the factory as it was inoperable. It took a lot of force to move it into the “fire” position and once their was almost impossible to get it back to “safe”. I tried working it with great force a couple of hundred times to loosen it up but only managed to put a blister on my thumb. I contacted Winchester and they had me send it back (on their dime) and got it back about 3 week later fully functional. At the range I was able to get it sighted in in short order though I may have to play with the loads to see if I can improve on the 1.5″ group. I carried the gun in deer rifle season and took a doe with it. I plan on holding on to this gun forever.

I bought a extreme weather stainless model 70 in 300 win mag. Absolutely a gorgeous rifle. Outside of looks it was the worst rifle I’ve ever owned. I have several of the pre 64 featherweights which are very high quality rifles but in recent years these newer model 70s have went down the toilet. My EWS model 70 couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn with hand loads or factory loads. It consistently shot sub basketball sized groups and in not kidding. I sent it back to winchester and they test fired it and got it to shoot about a 1 inch group with 150 gr core lokts and out of 20 different loads and types if ammo that was the only thing it would shoot even half way decent and if all I could use to hunt with was a core lokt I would quit hunting. I have since got rid of that rifle and bought a tikka veil alpine 300 win mag and with hand loads consistently shot 1/2 groups. Don’t waste your time with newer model 70s.
